National Arcaeological Museum | Object Of The Month - October 2012 | Τα νομίσματα (The Coins)

Τhe coins retrieved from the shipwreck were accumulated in masses with corrosion products and incrustations. Some are in advanced state of corrosion and present loss of material. It was determined that they are thirty-six silver and more than forty bronze coins. From the six identifiable coins, three are from Sicily and three from Asia Minor. The former include two of Katane issued in 187-170 BC and one of Panormos of the first cent. BC. The Asia Minor coins include one of Knidos, issued in 250-210 BC and two of Ephesos, issued either between 70-60 or 48 -27 BC. The presence of bronze coins from various Mediterranean regions in the shipwreck demonstrates the ship's wide sailing range

Fragmentary, suspension ring missing. Whitish layer of oxidization over the entire surface, chipped on the ring base and body.
This sub-conical object resembles a bell because of its concave base. The flat upper surface features twο small square mortises for the now lost suspension ring. The ring base is between 0.014 and 0.03m thick, and shows four small holes for nails, 0.027m from its edge. One of the holes is square (side 0.007m long) suggesting that the nail shaft had the same section and thickness!

Εμπορικοί αμφορείς (Transport amphorae)
 Material: Clay
Provenance: Antikythera shipwreck. From the material retrieved in 1900-1901 (inv. no. 27996, 28003) and in 1976 (inv. no. 30993)
Date: Mid 1st century BC
Dimensions: Height: 0,78m. (Ephesian amphora of the Nikandros Group)!

Intact pointed-toe commercial amphorae from Ephesos (the Nikandros Group), Rhodes, and Kos! The association of several amphora types with specific regions has allowed tentative classification. Due to their peculiar shape, they could be lined up and stacked in the hull of a ship in such a way that shifting of the cargo could be prevented! The amphora was the chief vase for transporting liquid as well as solid goods.  They are known from many shipwrecks throughout the Mediterranean. Double handles are characteristic of the amphorae from Kos. Ephesian amphorae have a strong, outwardly flaring rim, conical grooved toe and rectangular stamps on the handles. They have been found in a number of areas, including the Athenian Agora, Corinth, Alexandreia, and Palestine. Amphorae of the Lamboglia 2 type, made on the coasts of the Adriatic, were particularly widespread in the Mediterranean during the 1st century BC. The variety of the amphorae and their coexistence in the shipwrecked cargo provide some interesting evidence about their production and circulation!
