25 March - Greek Independence Day

March 25 is both a national (revolution against the barbarian Turks) and religious holiday (Annunciation nameday for Vangelis or Evangelos and  Evangelia or Eva).
There is a school flag parade in every town and village and a big armed forces of the country parade in Greece this day !

History
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Byzantine Empire fell to the Turks in 1453 and the Greeks remained under the Ottoman rule for nearly 400 years. During this time their language (Greek Language), their religion (Christianity) and their sense of identity (roots based in Ancient Greek art, Literature, Music and Byzantine Culture) remained strong. The result was to be influenced the illiterate Turks of that era. On March 25, 1821 the bishop Germanos of Patras raised the Greek flag at the Monastery of Agia Lavra in Peloponnese and one more revolution started against the Turks. The Greeks shouted "Freedom or Death" and they fought the War of Independence for 9 years (1821-1829) until a small part of modern Greece was finally liberated and it was declared the independent Greek nation.  At the end of April 1825, Ibrahim Pascha began the siege of Messolongi. Finally, in the night of the 10th to 11th of April 1826 the defenders of the town, which were worn out by the twelve-month siege and the lack of food, attempted a desperate and at the same time heroic exodus. The struggle for the liberation of all the lands inhabited by Greeks, in 1864 the Ionian islands and in 1881 the parts of Thessaly and Epirus.
Crete was liberated in 1897 and
On December 1, 1913 the Union of Crete was achieved with Greece. The islands of the Eastern Aegean and Macedonia were added in 1913 and Western Thrace in 1919.

Processing the Flag
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The national flag of Greece consists of nine horizontal indigenous  stripes of equal width, five blue and four white alternately, the first and last stripes being blue!
In the upper left corner is a blue square containing a white cross, which occupies the first five stripes (Greek Sky and Blue Sea)!
The Greek flag is hoisted on a white flagstaff at the top of which there is (on certain occasions) a white cross! The design and colours (blue and white) of the Greek national flag were established officially in January 1822 at the First National Assembly at Epidaurus. The nine lines of the flag reflects the number of syllables in the greek phrase Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος "Eleftheria i Thanatos" = Freedom or Death
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Ύμνος εις την Ελευθερίαν (Ýmnos is tin Eleftherían The Greek National Anthem: Hymn to Liberty {Hymn to the freedom}
in Greek

English Translation

We knew thee of old,
Oh, divinely restored,
By the lights of thine eyes,
And the light of thy Sword,
From the graves of our slain,
Shall thy valour prevail,
As we greet thee again-
Hail, Liberty! Hail!
(repeat previous two lines three times)

Mount Olympus, a divine place to be!

Mount Olympus is the lightest and most worshipped mountain of Greece. A magnificent place with numerous forests and gorges and summits of different heights, blessed with mild climate, and surrounded by Uranus, the heaven! In mythological past time never rained on Mount Olympus nor was it ever windy, but only some clouds were appearing from time to time to isolate the god's kingdom from the outside world and bless the world with water! Near ancient city is placed Larissa.

The Life of the Gods on Mount Olympus

Olympos, Throne of Δίας (Dias)

Mount Olympus was the divine kingdom of the Olympian gods and every Olympian had his own palace, which was mostly used as a dormitory! The gods were living  with a similar rhythm to the mortals, obeying to rules, abiding to customs and gathering from time to time in the main palace, the palace of Zeus!
The Olympian Gods used to socialize during dining time, where they
were taking decisions on the fate of the world and the mortals while eating ambrosia and drinking nectar. The Olympians had a whole staff at their service, like doctors, servants, preachers and doorkeepers like the Horae, who had the mission to open and close the gates of Mount Olympus to the outside world! However, should a god break an oath, he would be cursed to live nine years away from Mount Olympus and not be able to take part in any of the gods' gatherings.
The morphology of Mount Olympus, the ever changing natural beauty, the almost permanent cloud cover over its peaks and the frequent thunderstorms, filled the people around the mountain with awe and admiration, which in turn gave birth to numerous thrills and myths since the ancient times.
Inspired by its mystery and the legends the twelve ancient Greek Gods were created. According to Homer, the twelve gods lived in ravines, “the mysterious folds of Olympus”, where they had their palaces. Pantheon was their meeting place. Their tempestuous discussions were heard by the God of Gods, Zeus who was sitting on his imposing throne. From there he threw his thunders showing “his godly wrath”. In Iliad Olympus has been described as magnificent, long, glorious and full of trees.
The majority of these artefacts is exhibited in the museum of Dion. Olympus was protected by a special layer of clouds that the Seasons had control over. It was very common for the gods to meet in the hall and feast on ambrosia and wine or nectar served by the goddess Hebe. They would then rejoice by the music of Apollo and the 9 muses with the lyre. The legendary Battle of the Titans (Titanomachy) placed here too!
Olympus is close to the village of Litochoro in Northern Thessaly, in the borders of the prefectures of Larissa and Pieria. You can visit now Thessaly and come to Olympus mountain. This glorious Greek walk will stay definately unforgettable to you!
